Basin Electric Power Cooperative, a major employer in the area, led a group of seven local businesses to build support for the co-op. If this co-op model proves successful, partners are already looking to form another cooperative in the nearby town of Beulah, N.D. Area employers involved in starting the child care cooperative: * Basin Electric Power Cooperative and its subsidiary, Dakota Gasification Co. * Sakakawea Medical Center * North American Coal Corporation, representing the Coteau Properties Co. and Coyote Creek Mining Co. * Union State Bank * Knife River Care Center * Coal Country Community Health Centers * Coyote Station * Hazen Public Schools The Rural Electric and Telecommunications Development Centerwas launched in 1994 by the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC).
