Description
Summary:Uses W. I. Thomas & Florian Znaniecki's classic study The Polish Peasant in Europe and America. Monograph of an Immigrant Group (see SA 8:1/606904) to examine modernization-related generational differences in the economy of time. Key factors that influenced how time was collectively & individually allocated across the biographies of Polish peasants in Poland & Polish immigrants in Chicago, IL, are considered, including: changes in waged labor related to industrialization, migration, the secularization of religious lifeworlds, life plan individualization, technology, human capital investment (including education), & declines in the importance of family solidarity. Also discussed are changes from the perspective of individual actors & generational theory. 61 References. E. Blackwell
