Description
Summary:Discussed are two ethnographic studies of Ethiopian tribes. Uri Almagor's Pastoral Partners. Affinity and Bondpartnership among the Dassanetch of South-West Ethiopia, Manchester: Manchester U Press, Africana Publishing Co, 1978) deals with social relationships from the viewpoint of individual relationship networks, rather than the social group as a whole. The book provides an interesting & detailed sociological study, & raises a number of intriguing questions about the future of this group. Jean Lydall's & Ivo Strecker's The Hamar of Southern Ethiopia (Hohenschaftlarn: Klaus Renner Verlag, 1979 [see IRPS listings in this issue for both books]) adopts a different approach. Lydall & Strecker present a journal of their lengthy studies as well as first-hand information gathered from the Hamar. Their aim is to stimulate thought in the reader, rather than to impose their own analysis. Also discussed & praised for their completeness & method of presentation are Strecker's film Der Sprung uber die Rinder: ein Initiationsritus der Hamar in Sud-Aethiopien (Leaping on the Bulls: An Initiation Rite of the Hamar of South Ethiopia) & a record of Hamar music, Musik der Hamar, Sud-Aethiopien.
