Description
Summary:Participant observation & historical data from a Ru village in Vinhais Province, northeastern Portugal, are analyzed to assess the egalitarian character of cooperative work practices in that area. The organization of free reciprocal work & of corn harvesting & threshing is detailed, noting the absence of overt stratification in task sharing. A review of late nineteenth-century parish & tax records demonstrates the former dominance of three quasi-seigneurial families in the village. Hypotheses concerning the transition from such a hierarchical to an egalitarian structure are considered. Methods of expanding the study to other cooperatively based Iberian villages are suggested. 2 Tables, 1 Map, Appendix. Modified HA.
