Summary: | In a gov low income housing colony, data were gathered separately from both husband & wife (see SA 1941/D2056). The dependent variable was the level of COMM between spouses. 8 factors were subjected to factor analysis as an initial step in the study of patterns of inter-spouse COMM in a Muslim society (general decision-making in the home; about the children; present financial conditions as compared to past; estimate of future financial prospects; religious view of self & spouse; observance of ritual prayer of self & spouse; attitude toward moving away from relatives so as to take advantage of econ opportunity; & qualities sought in selecting a son's wife). A high degree of agreement between the separate responses given was taken as prima facie evidence of effective verbal COMM. The factor analysis produced 3 dimensions labelled as (a) 'role empathic relationship,' (b) 'husband dominant relationship,' & (c) 'shared values relationship.' Factors other than age, duration of marriage, & educ are signif in interspouse COMM, & more sociopsychol'al study is needed in this area. There is support for the demand of including husbands from each type of relationship in FP educ'al programs. Detailed consideration of interspouse relationships of several kinds is needed rather than a Western biased res focus on the highly communicative couple as a model of husband-wife concurrence & solidarity. 7 Tables.
