Summary: | Excerpts from Michel Breal's speech at a conference of French teachers & educators held in Paris, Aug 1878, are reproduced to illustrate his unorthodox pedagogical views on the role of dialects in French schools during a period of linguistic unification & standardization. The educational & linguistic policies in the second half of the nineteenth century in France are outlined & Breal's political courage to advocate the recognition of dialects as native languages that deserve their place in schools is noted. Breal's stand on the role of dialects in schools is found to be a mixture of his views as a linguist, educator, & politician. Z. Dubiel |
