Effects Of A Whey-carbohydrate Supplement On Markers Of Muscle Damage After Concurrent Exercise In Men

To examine the effects of a whey-carbohydrate supplement ingested mid-workout on exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) as determined by blood levels of creatine kinase (CK), myoglobin and fast-twitch skeletal muscle troponin-I (sTnI). Eight competitive "Crossfit" men (age, 27.4 + or - 1.9...

Description
Summary:To examine the effects of a whey-carbohydrate supplement ingested mid-workout on exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) as determined by blood levels of creatine kinase (CK), myoglobin and fast-twitch skeletal muscle troponin-I (sTnI). Eight competitive "Crossfit" men (age, 27.4 + or - 1.9 yrs; height, 180.4 + or - 2.4 cm; weight, 92.7 + or - 3.9 kg; body fat, 15.8 + or - 1.9 %) participated in a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study. Subjects performed two identical acute exercise trials (AET) held 7 days apart. Serum measurements were obtained pre AET and immediately post (IP), 30min post, 60min post, and 180min post AET. CK and myoglobin significantly increased over time indicating that the protocol induced muscle damage. CK levels peaked IP AET (mean + or - SE, percent change from pre AET, Water: 42 + or - 4; Supplement: 44 + or - 9, p<0.05). Myolobin levels peaked 60min post AET (mean + or - SE, percent change from pre AET, Water: 293+ or -36; Supplement: 303 + or - 37, p<0.05). sTnI positively correlated with CK (r= 0.434; p<0.001).
