Description
Summary:The San Gabriel Valley groundwater basin is the principal water source for the local population in the valley and as a result of contamination with volatile organic chemicals (VOC) and nitrate, the U.S. EPA placed the basin on the National Priority list. Three resins were tested for nitrate removal from groundwater and the effect of VOC, strong oxidants, and arsenic absorption on ion exchange resin degradation was investigated. Data from the bench scale tests were used with computer model simulations to produce ion exchange treatment process criteria for nitrate removal. Computer simulation of nitrate removal was compared and was found to simulate the ion exchange column performance.
