Summary: | The poetic structure of French librettos does not prescribe any single musical structure, but there were important ways that poets suggested pacing, groupings and musical punctuation to composers. Examines a portion of Hippolyte et Aricie from this perspective considering a few of the structural means selected by the librettist Pellegrin to shape his text, and Rameau's responses to these poetic shaping devices. Rameau generally took Pellegrin's cue: for the most part his musical settings closely complement the organisation of the poetry. The cues are subtle - suggesting and predicting but rarely prescribing. Focuses on Act II scene 2. (Quotes from original text) |
