Description
Summary:Student discipline and classroom management are common areas of concern for teachers within the British Columbia school system. As governments and school districts are demanding more and more accountability from schools and their teachers, new ways of managing student behavior and facilitating the development of life long learners are required. This paper describes the ways that encourage, promote and develop intrinsically motivated human behavior—Restitution—at Victoria West Elementary School. Focus group sessions and interviews with elementary teachers were used to develop strategies that support the practice of restitution within elementary schools. Key research findings indicate that in fact, it is the development of a supportive educational culture that is instrumental in the successful practice of restitution. This paper explores those effective strategies. These research findings ultimately indicate that it is incumbent upon all educators as life long learners, to model this process by examining their personal and professional beliefs about learning.
