Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to evaluate one of the Early Start to Emancipation Preparation (ESTEP) programs provided to foster youth ages l4-15 by California Community College Foundation. The program evaluated was the AWAKE City, which is a mock city that provides the foster youth an opportunity to role-play real life situations for a day. The sample included a total of 32 participants. However, only 16 subjects fit the target population for this program. Each of the 32 subjects was given a pre- and post-instrument developed primarily by the researcher. Data analysis included frequencies and t-tests. A significant difference (p = 0.039) in pre- and post-test scores for subjects that were 15 years of age and younger was found, indicating that subjects had learned the material being presented. However, the small sample size precludes any generalizations to the whole population. Recommendations are made for strengthening delivery of the ESTEP program to the target population.
