Description
Summary:The purposes of this field study were to determine the effects of a mentoring program on students at-risk of dropping out of high school. Conducted over one academic year, this study examined the effects of a mentoring program on eleven mentors and their mentees. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to gather data and analyze the following variables: (1) student drop-out rate; (2) student school attendance; (3) students self-efficacy; (4) student respect for others; (5) program strengths and weaknesses. Results of the study indicated that participation in a mentoring program may prevent at-risk youth from dropping out of school. Results also suggest that mentoring may positively effect student school attendance, student self-efficacy, as well as student and mentor respect for others. A discussion of mentoring as a model of a helping relationship is also presented. The dissertation concludes with recommendations for program improvement, suggestions for replication of the study, and a retrospective.
