Most of the studies were estimated that women in rural areas were not having awareness regarding pap smear. The investigator felt that there is a need to increase the knowledge among women regarding pap smear in rural areas. Objectives of the Study1. To assess the knowledge of women before and after structured teaching programme regarding pap smear.2. To determine the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding pap smear.3. To find out the association between knowledge on pap smear and selected variables.HypothesisH1.There will be a significant increase in knowledge regarding pap smear after structured teaching programme than before structured teaching programme.MethodsOne group pre-test and post-test design with quasi-experimental design was used to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on pap smear among women in selected rural community, Bangalore. In view of the nature of the problem and to accomplish the objectives of the study, a structured teaching programme was prepared focusing on pap smear; a structured questionnaire was prepared to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme. Reliability of the tool was tested and validity was ensured in consultation with guides and experts in the field of nursing and medicine. The study was carried out in Maruthi Nagar, B block and C block, Chikkbasti and Doddabasti rural community coming under K.Gollahalli Primary Health Center, South Bangalore. 80 women were selected by simple random sampling technique. Structured Interview schedule was conducted on the participants to collect the needed data. Collected data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statisticis.ResultsWith regard to the pre-test knowledge assessment, the mean was 11.03 and mean percentage was 42.4 percent and SD was 10.4.In Post-test significant increase in knowledge was found. However, the mean percentage of knowledge score had improved from 42.4 percent in pre-test to 79.0 percent in the post-test.Interpretation and ConclusionFurther, effectiveness of the STP was tested by inferential statistics using the paired’t’ test. A significant difference 28.72 (P<0.05) was found between pre-test and post-test knowledge scores of respondents indicating significant increase in knowledge after STP. Hence, hypothesis is accepted and STP was found to be effective in improving the knowledge of women.
