Summary: | There are two fundamentally different approaches possible to arrive at cyclic medium-ring-sized ketones and acyloins• The basic ring structure may be arrived at through condensation type reactions from appropriate aliphatic compounds capable of self—condensation. The other is expansion of smaller more easily obtainable ring structures. Thus a diazomethane type ring enlargement on tetrahydro-1,4-thiapyrone was successfully employed for the preparation of 4- ketothiaepane by Overberger and Katchman (1). The specific purpose of this work was the preparation of a cyclic ketosulfide, 5-oxothiacyclodctane by the Dieckmann condensation procedure. |
