Summary:Around the world, the museums are facing a significant problem that the old, traditional exhibits are no longer attractive to new audiences. As a result, the museums need new engaging experiences that integrate technology in memorable ways. This thesis explores digital media and interactive tactile technology as the method to augment an existing physical cultural heritage exhibit, breaking down the boundary between the visitors and the isolated, protected artifacts, I used augmented reality with narrative-based animation as the extension to the static visuals. The tactile interaction was designed to mimic the surface attributes of the original artifact and it is utilizing the textile-based capacitive sensor to engage the visitor in a participatory experience. This study focuses on the design for dedicated spaces such as museums and galleries. To establish an effective design process and evaluate the potentials of combining augmented reality with a textile-based capacitive sensor, a functioning prototype has been designed and developed. The prototype showcases Chinese Dragons from the era of the Qing Dynasty (1636–1912). The design process was informed by the feedback and input following consultations with museum experts. Future work may include the integration of other advanced reactive and smart materials such as Chameleon fibers to enhance the experience, which is briefly discussed in this thesis.
