Description
Summary:The objective of this qualitative case study was to investigate the knowledge levels, attitudes, beliefs, and perceived barriers of recommending and promoting workplace accommodations by secondary transition practitioners. It explored the extensive supports available to persons with a disability as they seek competitive employment. It also presented evidence of a specific curricular gap in pre-employment skill acquisition for students with special needs: the knowledge of workplace accommodations and how to secure them. This study presented a suggested connectivity to employment for persons with a disability and how knowledge of workplace accommodations can support job acquisition and retention. The study also presented the impact of the great equalizers for persons with a disability: legislation, regulations, government initiatives, Amendments to the Constitution, and Supreme Court Decisions. The study was conducted in a public school entity located in Western Pennsylvania. The findings were sourced in semi-structured interviews which were conducted with secondary transition practitioners, in an Internet search for workplace accommodations resources, and in the federally directed standard for creating a transition grid within an Individualized Education Program. The definitive goal of this study was to suggest a curricular gap that overlooks the need for recommending and promoting of workplace accommodations.
