Summary: | This thesis is concerned primarily with nitrogen fixation by the blue-green algae (Cyanophyceae or Myxophyceae), a group of prokaryotic photosynthetic micro-organisms which are widespread and sometimes abundant in natural ecosystems. Initial studies show that nitrogen-fixing algae occur in marine and brackish habitats, that they liberate large quantities of the nitrogen they fix, and that growth on N2 can be as good as on combined nitrogen. |
