Description
Summary:This study explores the legal guidelines and state regulations concerning the viability of home schooling as an educational alternative. Currently, laws dealing with home schooling vary from state to state. Emphasis is directed towards the examination of the Michigan Home School Compliance Procedures October 8, 1986 document. Advocates of home schooling estimate 10,000 to 12,000 children in Michigan are home educated. The U.S. Department of Education estimates 120,000 to 260,000 children are home schooled nationally. Pertinent background material discussed include the fundamental reasons why parents decide to home educate their children, commercial curriculum, student socialization, teacher certification and academic achievement of home schooled children. Advocates of home schooling state statistical data indicating academic performance tends to accelerate in a home school environment. Non-home school advocates question the validity of this statistical data concerning the accelerated achievements in a home school setting.
