Summary: | On 27 February 2018 the British Medical Journal published a systematic review and meta-analysis of the clinical course of untreated cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CIN2) under active surveillance. The study covering 3,160 women concluded, "Active surveillance of CIN2 rather than immediate intervention is justified, especially among younger women".2 In other words, after conducting a metaanalysis and systematic review over the period 1973 to 2016, these authors support what Associate Professor Herbert Green suggested to the National Women's Hospital Medical Committee in 1966, ie, that young women diagnosed with carcinoma in situ by cytology should be given a punch biopsy and carefully monitored rather than immediately offered radical treatment. Natural history of cervical neoplasia and risk of invasive cancer in women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 3: A retrospective cohort study. |
