Summary: | Cytology showed abundant mucin in the background with histiocytes, ciliated columnar epithelial cells, and cellular debris, consistent with bronchogenic cyst diagnosis. A more accurate diagnosis is usually made by MRI, but frequently a confirmed diagnosis cannot be made by CT/MRI alone.3 In fact, a bronchogenic cyst was only considered in 61% (11/18) of patients in the preoperative differential diagnosis.2 The presence of a fluid-fluid level has been described with MRI (T1),4 and recently with EUS/EBUS.5 In a systemic review of case reports, bronchogenic cyst was described on EBUS as 69% (11/16) hypoechoic and 31% (5/16) anechoic.6 Complications rate post TBNA (conventional/EBUS-guided) was 16.1% (5/31), similar to complications rate with surgical intervention.2,6 EBUS presents as a useful tool in the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst, especially in situations where CT is inconclusive and MRI is contraindicated. |
