Summary:This text is an initial effort to systematize an institutional history of the International Institute for the Portuguese Language (IILP), an agency of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). It divides the life of the institution in four stages: 1. Design (1989-99), 2. Installation (2000-05), 3. Consolidation (2006-10) and 4. Expansion (2011 to now). It analyzes its operation, its achievements and its limitations in promoting the Portuguese language as a multi-centered language, as well as its most recent projects.
