Interleukin-12 induces a Th1-like response toBurkholderia malleiand limited protection in BALB/c mice

We evaluated the effect of interleukin (IL)-12 on the immune response toBurkholderia malleiin BALB/c mice. Mice were vaccinated with non-viableB. malleicells with or without IL-12. There was a seven- to nine-fold increase in IgG2a levels, and a significant increase in the proliferative response and...

Description
Summary:We evaluated the effect of interleukin (IL)-12 on the immune response toBurkholderia malleiin BALB/c mice. Mice were vaccinated with non-viableB. malleicells with or without IL-12. There was a seven- to nine-fold increase in IgG2a levels, and a significant increase in the proliferative response and interferon (IFN)-γ production by splenocytes from mice that receivedB. malleiand IL-12. We saw an increase in survivors in the groups of mice that receivedB. malleiand IL-12 when challenged, compared to mice that received onlyB. malleior IL-12. The results suggest that IL-12 can enhance the Th1-like immune response toB. malleiand mediate limited protection from a lethal challenge.
