Gives his impressions of that first trip into China in 1973, in the middle of the Cultural Revolution. Describes his career which started in 1971 as a speaker of Mandarin Chinese, posts in Hong Kong and Beijing, and eventually ambassador to Chine in the 1990s. Discusses relations with China and NZ's and China's priorities over the years, a visit by Muldoon to China, his encounters with the Chinese and how life has changed in China for them, the political issues of Tiananmen Square and nuclear testing, and how NZ built up some status with China. Comments on current relations with China, relationships with Taiwan, and trends in Chinese governance.
