Description
Summary:The relative scarcity of Acadian colonial documents has resulted in a new generation of Acadian historians turning to micro-history. This research is of that nature because it deals with a type of document that is very rare in the Acadian archival corpus, the after-death inventory. Inspired by the work of other historians, we decided to do a preliminary analysis of seven afterdeath inventories found in notarized documents from Plaisance (now Placentia). This study involved creating a sample of the degree of wealth in the main social classes of the colony; that is, the merchants, the habitantfishermen, the civil administrators and the fishermen, with a view to adjusting our data collection and analysis methods before looking into all of the available documentation. Our work is related to the development of two parallel projects: the social history of French sedentary fishery in America and a social and economic monograph of Plaisance.
