Summary: | The international sea change following the end of the cold war vastly altered Turkey’s foreign and security policy environment, weakening Ankara’s bonds with its Western allies and forcing assertiveness in relations with neighboring countries and in regional developments.¹ The old, predominantly passive approach to foreign policy that had been based on the Kemalist maxim “Peace at home. Peace in the world” slowly is giving way to a more self-conscious foreign policy that includes a certain readiness to wage well-calculated conflicts with neighboring countries if they are deemed necessary for the realization of Turkey’s national interests.
