Summary: | The Turks, who had a nomadic culture in the past, benefited from animals in many ways to meet their basic needs such as nutrition, clothing and transportation. They did not only regard animals as material elements, but also attributed sanctity to animals by establishing a spiritual bond with them. In addition, animal names whose strength and courage they were attracted to were also used as proper names/personal names. The presence of animals in the lifes of the Turks has led to the appearance of animal names in almost all literary genres, both oral and written. Mahmud of Kashgarî's Dîvânu Lugâti't-Türk, which was written in order to teach Turkic to Arabs, is among the most important works of Turkology with the rich information it provides about the way of life of the period in which it was written and the presence of words it contains. In the work, there are many words related to animal names as well as kinship names, organ names, plant names, which are part of our culture and are included in the basic core vocabulary. This study provides information about which of the 234 animal names identified in Dîvânu Lugâti't-Türk have been preserved in the Uzbek Turkic, and whether they are similar in form and meaning. |
