Summary: | Teaching younger students about racial injustice and social justice is a challenge in many classrooms, due to complexity of the issues discussed and a push to keep politics out of classrooms. Using a variety of books focused on racism and social justice, this vignette explores how a teacher empowers students to take action through teaching a unit about civil disobedience and injustice based around the Black Lives Matter movement. The focus is to have students understand what these movements are and how they come to be, as well as encourage self-reflection and deeper connections to the texts being read. |
