Summary: John Dewey's thoughts in the field of education have inspired many thinkers and practitioners of modern education today, apart from Dewey's controversial thoughts that invite pros and cons. In presenting his various ideas as well, Dewey always put forward very argumentative rational reasons. His international reputation lies in his contribution to the educational philosophy of "American Progressivism". Dewey was influential not only in professional philosophy, but also for the development of his fundamental ideas in economics, law, anthropology, political theory and psychology. Experience (experience) is one of the keys in the philosophy of instrumentalism. Dewey's philosophy of instrumentalism is built on the assumption that knowledge originates from experiences and moves back towards experience. Dewey's views on education grew with his work in the school laboratory for children at the University of Chicago. KEYWORDS: Modern Education; Controversial Thoughts; Philosophy of Education.   ABSTRAK: Pemikiran John Dewey dalam bidang pendidikan banyak mengilhami para pemikir dan praktisi pendidikan modern dewasa ini, terlepas dari berbagai pemikiran kontroversial Dewey yang mengundang Pro dan Kontra. Dalam menampilkan berbagai gagasanya juga, Dewey senantiasa mengemukakan alasan-alasan rasional yang sangat argumentatif. Reputasi internasionalnya terletak dalam sumbangan pikirannya terhadap filsafat pendidikan "Progressivisme Amerika". Dewey tidak hanya berpengaruh dalam kalangan filsafat profesional, tetapi juga karena perkembangan idenya yang fundamental dalam bidang ekonomi, hukum, antropologi, teori politik dan psikologi. Pengalaman (experience) adalah salah satu kunci dalam filsafat instrumentalisme. Filsafat instrumentalisme Dewey dibangun berdasarkan asumsi bahwa pengetahuan berpangkal dari pengalaman-pengalaman dan bergerak kembali menuju pengalaman. Pandangan Dewey mengenai pendidikan tumbuh bersamaan dengan kerjanya di laboratorium sekolah untuk anak-anak di University of Chicago.
