Summary: | Societies have been established around water resources throughout history. For this reason, the Eastern Mediterranean has been important since the beginning of history. The importance of the region has gradually increased due to the fact that Cyprus Island is the intersection point of sea routes and various channels and straits. In addition to its importance due to its geographical location in the historical process, the Eastern Mediterranean has become more important than it has ever been with the effect of the energy reserves discovered in the region in recent years. The Eastern Mediterranean, which has been a checkpoint for the Middle East, which has been struggling with internal turmoil and wars for years, has become a region with rich energy resources, many straits and energy routes, which is in the arc of encircling Russia in its domination policies, and where access to energy resources is increasingly difficult. The increasing importance of the region forces the countries of the region and other states with interests in the region to increase their activities. In this study, first of all, the geography of the region and the basic definitions that should be known were mentioned, and then the policies of the countries operating in the region on the sharing of maritime jurisdiction areas in the axis of energy and maritime security were evaluated. The theses of the parties were examined from a legal point of view, and the evaluation of projects, especially the Eastern Mediterranean Pipeline Project supported by the European Union, for the discovery, drilling and transfer of energy resources in the region was included. |
