Description
Summary:This report presents a detailed description of the user's manual and application of a transportation data gathering program using events recorder and global positioning systems (GPS). The Transportation Event and Data Recording software, "TEDR", is a powerful field data gathering tool developed in the Civil Engineering and Land Surveying Department of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM). "TEDR" was used for data collection for transit studies and subsequent analysis of a fixed bus route service. An analytical representation of fixed bus route services presents some of the most important performance parameters that must be calculated when analyzing and designing these kinds of systems. A comparison between manual data gathering techniques and the GPS and computer-aided tool was performed during the case study of the Metrobus I Express route, which runs from Old San Juan to Sagrado Corazon station of the Tren Urbano. The results show the benefits of working with the program in terms of efficiency and data quality. Sample calculations of the described performance parameters were performed with the data obtained from both methods in order to be compared and evaluated. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that the computer-aided data gathering tool is more powerful, efficient and reliable than traditional manual methods, and further investigation should be promoted in the use of technological applications for transportation studies.
