Summary: | The pulp and paper and chlorine/caustic soda (chloralkali) industries have been buffeted by the economic problems affecting the world economy in recent years. As the U.S. and world economy recover and improve from last year's downturn, demand for pulp and paper will rise, thus requiring more caustic soda. However, a lack of investment in chloralkali capacity will trigger higher caustic prices because of tight supply/demand balances worldwide. This is due to a lack of investment in chloralkali capacity, with very little new capacity announced for the 2003 to 2006 period. |
