Summary: | Explores Ibn Khaldun's (1332-1405) theories & ideas about the causes that lead to the rise & decline of civilizations. Examination of the dynamic & interdisciplinary character of Khaldun's methodology shows, systematically, how moral, social, political, economic, geographical, & cultural factors find their appropriate place in his schemata. His ideas are recast in contemporary terminology, making his analysis & prescriptions relevant. In addition, the central role of welfare, justice, & development in statecraft is outlined, & a lucid model provided of a contemporary Islamic welfare state whose maqasid include the material & moral well-being of its citizens. 1 Figure.
