Description
Summary:Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), in which the ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth, is a common congenital heart defect in premature infants. Lemmers et al present a retrospective comparison of cerebral oxygenation, as measured by near infrared spectroscopy, and MRI-assessed regional brain volume and myelination in 3 groups of premature infants. Their findings confirm that a hemodynamically significant PDA is associated with reduced regional cerebral oxygenation saturation (rSco...) and that the infants who needed surgery had significantly lower rSco... before ductal closure than those who did not.
