Summary: | There are two main animal model systems currently used to study MS: experimental autoimmune/allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) and experimental viral infection, including the Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV). Both models have led to a greater understanding of MS and the development of clinical therapies. These systems have allowed in-depth study of the immune system and inflammatory mechanisms potentially involved in MS pathophysiology. Analysing therapeutic successes and failures with both models may also help the development of more directed, positive treatments for MS that have fewer negative effects. |
