Summary:	The authors evaluate present quality-assurance programs for computed tomography systems, using data from a survey of CT facilities by 21 states and recommendations provided by manufacturers in compliance with amendments to the federal performance standard for diagnostic x-ray equipment. Part 2 of this article, to be published in an upcoming issue, offers a discussion of the impact of CT quality-assurance programs and conclusions from this review.
