Description
Summary:For those concerned about spam overload, it appears that some relief may have arrived. On December 16, 2003, President Bush signed the Controlling the Assault of NonSolicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003 ("CAN-SPAM"), which became effective on January 1, 2004. Spamming is the sending of unsolicited multiple commercial electronic mail messages. CAN-SPAM is supposed to help curb this costly, time-consuming and irritating practice. CAN-SPAM requires that: 1. Subject lines on commercial e-mail must be honest. 2. Misleading or bogus subject lines to trick recipients into opening e-mail messages are prohibited. 3. All unsolicited e-mail must contain a legitimate return e-mail address as well as the sender's postal address. 4. Unsolicited e-mail must be clearly identified as an advertisement or solicitation for a product and/or service. 5. Commercial e-mailers must provide legitimate, easily accessible ways for recipients to "opt-out" of receiving future messages from the sender.
