Description
Summary:Readability research has made rapid progress during the last few decades, the focus shifting to the analysis of text structure & the processes involved in reading. Although formulas & the cloze procedure are economic & reliable, it is argued that the analysis of idea density & of the organization of ideas holds the key to the nature of the text. A text should meaningfully relate to the prior knowledge of the reader & access to the context & textual schemata of the text. The textbook writer in particular should benefit from such analysis. Several readability measures developed in English were applied to a text written in Hindi. Results are remarkably similar to work done with English texts & emphasize that the more recent approaches to readability focusing on syntax, conceptual difficulty, & organization are a teacher's best help in selecting materials for students. 3 Tables, 1 Figure, 19 References.
