Fossil fuels supply the electricity to our homes and gasoline to our cars, enables modern agriculture, dominates national security and the health of the economy, and impacts the Earth’s fragile environment. Most of this energy market is controlled by a single finite resource, fossil fuels. As explained in Chapter 1, the world’s insatiable need for energy and society’s dependence upon fossil fuels to fulfill this need will likely lead to economic and environmental consequences of unprecedented proportion in the coming century.
