Impact of peers behaviour on the energy efficiency of BitTorrent over optical networks

Description
Summary:In this paper we analyse the energy consumption of BitTorrent, the most popular Peer-to-Peer (P2P) application, over IP/WDM networks considering different peers behaviour scenarios. We show, by mathematical modelling and simulation, that leechers can cause high network energy consumption if they leave the network after finishing downloading. We introduce an energy efficient approach to compensate for the negative impact of leechers departure on network energy consumption.
