Summary: | The present work proposes a unified methodology for the three-dimensional reconstruction of geological samples using structure-from-motion (SfM) as preparation for the creation of a Digital Rock Samples database. The proposed methodology aims at the generation of a 3D model with geometric quality and sub-millimetric spatial resolution through a simple workflow, integrating all the necessary techniques for solving the main failures in the reconstruction of homogeneous or reduced size samples. The methodology was tested with four geologists with different graduation levels, ranging from undergraduate, who receive the complete methodological procedures to a Post-Doctor, who did not receive any information about the procedures. The results reveal that the available bibliography does not adequately address the photo collection procedures for 3D reconstruction. This work demonstrates that the lack of a unified and solid methodology for photo collection can influence the quality of the generated 3D models, geometrically and resolution-wise. |
