Summary:Considering the high consumption of dietary supplements in gyms with ergogenic purpose associated with increased of various these products on the market, the aim of this study was to evaluate the use of supplements by body builders in gyms in Resende City, RJ. The group consisted of 95 subjects who answered a self-administered questionnaire. Being 62 students (65.4%) men and 33 (34.7%) females. It was verified that 76.8% of the population uses some form of nutritional supplement, and the protein concentrates have been the most common (64%) in order to increase muscle mass (75%). Most athletes consume supplements without professional guidance of specialist (75.4%) and only 20.5% were prescribed by the nutritionist. The percentage of consumption of supplements for men was 83.9% and 63.6% of women. So, it was observed that the consumption of dietary supplements in the studied group is high, and we need more studies and explanations of consumption and the consequences of the indiscriminate use of these substances. Tendo em vista o consumo crescente e por vezes excessivo de suplementos alimentares dentro de academias de ginastica, com finalidade ergogenica e/ou estetica, associado ao aumento da oferta dos mesmos no mercado, objetivou-se avaliar a prevalencia do consumo de suplementos por praticantes de musculacao de diversas academias de ginastica da cidade de Resende, RJ. O grupo de estudo constitui-se de 95 individuos que responderam a um questionario auto-aplicavel. Sendo 62 alunos (65,4%) do genero masculino e 33 (34,7%) do genero feminino. Verificou-se que 76,8% da amostra declarou consumir algum tipo de suplemento nutricional, sendo que os concentrados proteicos foram os mais citados (64%), com objetivo de aumento de massa muscular (75%). A maioria dos esportistas declarou consumir suplementos sem indicacao de profissional capacitado (75,4%) e apenas 20,5% por indicacao de nutricionista. O percentual de consumo de suplementos por homens foi de 83,9%, e o de mulheres de 63,6%. Diante do elevado consumo de suplementos nutricionais no grupo estudado, existe a necessidade de novas pesquisas e esclarecimentos sobre o consumo e consequencias do uso indiscriminado dos mesmos.
