Plight of the plovers. (piping plovers recover on protected Eastern beaches)
Off-road vehicles pose the greatest threat to the recovering piping plover species. The Park Service must frequently restrict vehicle access to areas of beaches where the plovers nest. The population nationwide has grown from 790 in 1986 to 1,200 in 1993.
