Summary:The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching developed the Doctor of Arts degree as the college teaching doctorate. This paper provides a historical narrative of the Doctor of Arts degree (D.A.) as the advent of interdisciplinarity and pedagogy as scholarship in American higher education. The D.A. degree now has more than thirty years of accomplishments as an innovative agenda within the American academy.
