Description
Summary:The thyroid hormones act on nearly every cell in the body, which increase the basal metabolic rate, affect protein synthesis, and help regulate long bone growth and neural maturation, and metabolism of macronutrients. This study aimed to investigate the serum glucose concentration in thyroid dysfunction and euthyroid patients and correlate with thyroid function parameters. A hospital based comparative cross-sectional study conducted 148 study participants enrolled by purposive sampling in the period of March-May 2017 to assess the serum glucose concentration among thyroid dysfunction patients and euthyroid participants. Serum glucose, thyroid function parameters measured by Glucose Oxidase Peroxidase and Chemiluminescence Immuno Assay methods respectively. Data were entered in Microsoft Excel[TM] and analyzed using the SPSS version 22.0 and expressed in frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. ANOVA was applied to find the mean difference of serum glucose between three different groups. Pearson's and Spearman rho correlation was used to correlate the thyroid function parameters with serum glucose considering p value < 0.05 at 95% confidence interval. Majority (81.8%) of the participants were female having 74 in euthyroid group, 37 in hyperthyroid and 37 in hypothyroid group. The mean age of the participants was 40.80 [+ or -] 16.78 year's ranges from three to 79 years. The mean of serum glucose concentration was higher in hyperthyroid group (105.77 [+ or -] 58.45 mg/dL), as compared to euthyroid (95.48 [+ or -] 34.19 mg/dL) and hypothyroid group (88.58 [+ or -] 24.63 mg/dL) (p = 0.176). There is no significant correlation between serum glucose with thyroid function parameters. Serum glucose concentration is comparable in euthyroid, hyperthyroid and hypothyroid groups.
