Description
Summary:In this review, the chemistry of well-defined organometallic complexes and their reactivity with the parent hydrocarbon, methane, are described. In some instances, the reactivity of transition metal complexes with other alkanes is also discussed. Historical and current studies related to carbon–hydrogen bond activation with organometallic complexes, in particular methane activation, are the focal point of this review. Seminal work involving oxidative addition/electrophilic activation, σ-bond metathesis, 1,2-CH bond additions, and metalloradical reactions are discussed along with some applications. New transformations such as 1,3-CH bond additions and electrophilic carbene insertion reactions involving methane are also presented along with promising applications in these areas.
