Description
Summary:Between 1920 and 1921, the GOELRO, or the State Comission for the Electrification of Russia, was set up. This institution presented an ambitious plan for the electrification of the country, which soon became an official state policy. One of its main advocates and promoters was Lenin. His motives were: to industrialise the USSR, to win support in the scientific and technical community, to integrate the peasantry into Soviet power and to exploit the natural resources of the gigantic territory. Now, one hundred years afther the death of the Bolshevik leader, it is worth asking about the political and cultural aspects of this great technological project. Questions such as the weight of certain technocratic approaches or certain visions of domination over nature help us to analyse the electrification led by Lenin in terms of political ecology.
