Abstract | Throughout the 1919-22 Turkish national movement, MI 1c, later known as the Secret Intelligence Service, and the other associated British intelligence services provided a great deal of information about events in Anatolia. Although telegraphic and wireless communication made a significant contribution to the work of the intelligence services, most information was obtained from traditional sources including Turkish, Greek, Armenian, and Arab agents. |

AbstractList | Throughout the 1919-22 Turkish national movement, MI 1c, later known as the Secret Intelligence Service, and the other associated British intelligence services provided a great deal of information about events in Anatolia. Although telegraphic and wireless communication made a significant contribution to the work of the intelligence services, most information was obtained from traditional sources including Turkish, Greek, Armenian, and Arab agents. British intelligence regarding the Turkish national movement in Anatolia in the period of national struggle 1919-1922 was obtained from intercepts of Turkish, Greek, French, Italian and other telegraphic and radio communications. A great deal of information was also obtained from the more traditional sources of information available at the time, for example from Turkish, Greek, Armenian and Arab agents recruited by the British intelligence services. During the Turkish national struggle (1919-1922), the British government was well informed about the Sultan & his government in Constantinople. MI lc, later known as the Secret Intelligence Service, & other British intelligence services, particularly naval intelligence, provided a great deal of information about events. Although some information was obtained by intercepting telegraphic & radio communications, most came from traditional sources, such as agents & informants. It is questionable whether this intelligence radically affected British policy. London's policy with regard to the Ottoman Empire, particularly Anatolia, was based on the principle of partition specified in secret treaties concluded by the Entente Powers in WWI. The subsequent retreat from this policy was dictated, for the most part, by events & developments that could be easily interpreted & understood without information from the intelligence services. However, it appears that British intelligence made a significant difference in one area, because information about the nature of the struggle between the moderate & extremist political parties encouraged London to pursue a policy of compromise, which it might otherwise have rejected. 48 References.
