Summary:The authors have explored the prevalence of Lassa virus infection in West Africa after a recent report of its importance in several countries there. After the discovery of the disease in 1969 in Nigeria, serological surveys and sporadic case reports have demonstrates its wide distribution in countries of West Africa and the Central African Republic. They recently estimated that 100,000-300,000 infections may occur annually, with perhaps 5000 deaths.
