Description
Summary:The Berg River redfin is a critically endangered cyprinid fish found only in the Berg and Verlorenvlei River systems of South Africa's Western Cape. The morphology, distribution, abundance, habitat, ecology, and reproductive habits of this fish are summarized. The major threats to populations of the Berg River redfin are predation from introduced, alien fish species (including smallmouth bass and rainbow trout), habitat degradation and destruction due to agricultural development and invasive alien plants. The Cape Nature Conservation organization monitors populations, and the Fynbos Working for Water Project is clearing away alien trees that reduce runoff to streams. Specific conservation needs are listed.
