Summary: | Welsh presents compelling evidence for the reliability, validity, and potential utility of the Eating Competence Model developed by Ellyn Satter. She views this model as compatible with Federal nutrition policy and sees opportunities for synergy. The Model provides the skills and resources for managing the food context and a path for healthy diet and healthy relationship with food and perhaps a real chance for preventing escalating obesity with less of the emotional trauma. She believes that all the projects under the United States Department of Agriculture-Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program are good examples of translational research and are ahead of the curve in moving nutrition education research from an idyllic setting into what will work in the community. |
